Thomas Nguyen

Credentials: B.S. 2022

As a high school student in Glendale, Wisconsin, Thomas Nguyen was already deep into power engineering. He worked on research projects on microgrids and ship electrification with Associate Professor Rob Cuzner at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Center for Sustainable Electric Energy Systems. When he joined UW-Madison as an electrical engineering undergraduate, Nguyen continued that work under the mentorship of Professor Giri Venkataramanan and other WEMPEC and WISPO faculty and staff.

His outstanding work has led to several awards and scholarships, including participation in the Leaders in Engineering Excellence and Diversity Program, Mercile J. Lee Scholars Program, as well as three IEEE Power & Energy Society scholarships and the IEEE PES John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar Award for the Midwest. He has also worked for two summers as a senior technical intern at Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems in Milwaukee, where he will intern in the summer 2022.

After graduation in May, Nguyen plans to continue his power engineering studies at UW-Madison as a WEMPEC graduate student advised by Jean van Bladel Associate Professor Daniel Ludois.
