Job Summary  

Our engineering team at the LiveWire Labs facility in Milwaukee, WI is in search of a talented Staff Motor Controls Engineer to join our team. Depending on experience, the position level may be Principal. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on high-performance electric motorcycles, pushing the limits of motor control systems for performance, cost, efficiency, and safety.

You will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and implementing motor control strategies for our electric motorcycle platforms. You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team to enhance the performance and rideability of electric motorcycles, ensuring optimal power delivery, energy efficiency, and rider experience.

This is what you’ll do:

  • Design and implement motor control algorithms including torque and speed control, regenerative braking, and performance tuning.
  • Implement advanced control strategies to optimize motor efficiency and response.
  • Develop software-based resolver and sensor-less position sensing methods.
  • Facilitate seamless integration with batteries, inverters, and vehicle control units (VCUs).
  • Validate motorcycle performance metrics through simulation and physical testing.
  • Conduct thermal and safety analyses to ensure that motor control systems operate within safe thermal limits and meet relevant safety standards.
  • Collaborate with embedded software engineers to implement control algorithms on real-time embedded systems, ensuring robust performance and responsiveness.
  • Contribute to the development of new motor control technologies and innovative features.
  • Continuously monitor and improve throttle response and traction control performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve motor control issues from test and field reports.

Education Required 

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls Engineer, or related technical degree. Advanced technical degree is a plus.

Experience Required  

  • Minimum 8+ years of related experience in the following areas.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing motor control systems for electric vehicles.
  • Strong understanding of motor control theory, including techniques such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), and regenerative braking systems.
  • Hands-on experience with electric motors, power electronics, and embedded systems.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools for motor control design, testing, and validation.
  • Experience with vehicle network and calibration tools such as Vector and ATI Vision.
  • Familiarity with standards and regulations relevant to automotive or motorcycle systems
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills for motor control and embedded systems.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and rider experience in two-wheeled vehicles.
  • Experience with high-voltage systems (e.g., battery packs and power electronics)
  • Familiarity with HiL (Hardware-in-Loop) and SiL (Software-in-Loop) testing.
  • Understanding of thermal management techniques and integration of cooling systems.
  • Passion for motorcycles, electric vehicles, and sustainable transportation technologies.

Pay Range: $112,400 – $174,200

The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience.
