Job Description
Garrett Advancing Motion is the true pioneer of automotive turbocharging dating back more than 60 years, and continues today as the world’s leader in turbo technology solutions for passenger cars, commercial vehicles and off-highway equipment. Garrett supplies turbos to nearly all major automakers in addition to the global aftermarket under the Garrett brand name. As a result, unlike many other OEM or supplier organizations, Garrett Advancing Motion has visibility across a broad range of OEM’s and Tier 1 suppliers.
We have an exciting new opening in our Torrance, CA location for a System Engineer. You’ll be given the opportunity to develop next generation products and technologies for the automotive industry.
Responding to the System Engineering Manager, the System Engineer drives the following activities:
- Develop, manage and ensure adherence to our specifications
- Understand system requirements; work closely with the engineering teams to flow down the system requirements to the firmware/software levels. Help define new system requirements based on interactions with customers
- Provide customer & partner single point of contact responsibility for technical teams to ensure technical cross functional alignment.
- Develop and document overall product architecture (electrical hardware, software)
- Through technical documentation (specification, gap analysis, FMEA test plans, test reports and other areas), ensure technical alignment exists between customer, partners and Garrett cross functions.
- Manage technical issues and coordinate through definition of problem statement, root cause analysis, and solution implementation with customer and all functions
- Participate in supplier panel selection and supplier development, collaborate on supply strategies
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in systems engineering which includes hardware and software development. Prefer systems engineering experience with fuel cell or powertrain electrification technologies.
- Product launch experience
- Prior experience with Requirements Management tools such as Jama or DOORS
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience directing technical teams. Ability to work in a team environment and negotiate solutions with hardware/software and systems engineering is preferred. Strong fundamentals in electrical engineering is preferred.
- Ability to learn new designs quickly and independently.
- Proven project management skills. Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally. Ability to work in a global, virtual team environment.
- Act as expert for our customers, and discuss needs, requirements, and issues.
- Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, CAN-FD, Ethernet, and/or FlexRay is preferred
- Understanding of Automotive standards is preferred

Education:
At a minimum – a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with an emphasis on powertrain systems or fuel cell systems is highly desirable.
